The landmark of Rotterdam - the Erasmus Bridge in a new light
The 802-meter-long structure spans the New Meuse River with a 410-meter-long asymmetrical cable-stayed bridge that has a 278-meter-wide main opening and a 139-meter-high white angled pylon. The bridge was designed by architects Van Berkel & Bos (UNStudio) in 1989 and quickly became a city landmark.
As part of extensive renovations, SILL has restaged the bridge. As before, the pylon and supporting cables are illuminated so that the Erasmus Bridge is visible even from a great distance. The previous luminaires with conventional lighting technology were replaced with the energy-efficient 14L series LED luminaires. The lane lights and decorative lighting on the underside of the bridge structure were also replaced.
In a ceremony, the city of Rotterdam officially commissioned the new lighting. The infinite color possibilities were demonstrated with an impressive light show. For the illumination, a total of 86 luminaires of type 14L in 4500 K and RGBW were installed on the previously used light points - all equipped with a DALI control system. With IP65 and active temperature management (operationally safe up to ta55°), the 14L brings the interplay of light and bridge architecture to life in the outdoor area.
The street lighting of the bridge was equipped with the luminaires of the 155 series and an additional radio control "CityTouch". CityTouch is a software platform for outdoor lighting. It includes web applications for managing the street lights and analyzing the lighting data. This new technology turns ordinary city lighting into a true smart city.
With this new lighting, the city saves a full 70% on energy costs for bridge lighting.
